Although the truth about life after death is an enduring
mystery, humans have long grasped for answers. What
can ancient death practices teach us about our modern
fatal obsession?
From millennia-old boatmen preserved in the sand, to
the hanging coffins of the Igorot, dangling precariously
overhead; from Scythian mounds that pay homage to
warriors on horseback, to an ancient wonder hidden under
ruins of Alexandria… In a remote Indonesian cave, the bones
of a Holocene child indicate an unusually tender goodbye.
Unearthing Aztec holy sites, evidence of human sacrifice
defies history’s crudest depictions.
To guide loved ones into the afterlife, Bhutan’s Lhop people
perform elaborate ceremonies with corpses. Translating
the afterlife into architecture, the Lycians carve urban
facades into cliffs, bringing them closer to their gods.
Hundreds of kilometres from Giza, the Nubians use
pyramids as status symbols. Meanwhile, in the American
Northwest, elaborate geometric formations hide the
monumental grave sites of an advanced lost tribe.
As symbols of power, stature, and spirituality emerge
from the dust, death takes on new meaning. Grave
goods, glorious tombs, and mysterious discoveries reveal
the path and plight of mortals in the ancient world.
